We are running our latest series of kayaking courses for 2025

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is designed for novice or 'out of practice' kayakers wanting the opportunity to learn sufficient kayaking skills to paddle club kayaks safety and familiarise yourself within a club environment. The course also offers an opportunity to learn and try out other types of craft such as Canadian Canoes as well as meet friendly likeminded individuals socially.
Newbury Canoe Club requires students to attend and pass the kayak 'Start' course before committing themselves to the 'Discover' course. Kayaking requires a degree of physical dexterity and comfort on the water, the 'Start' course gives you the opportunity to experience this before committing to the ‘Discover’ course.
The ‘Start’ Course lasts approx. 4hrs with at least 3 on the water. This session covers safety, equipment, getting on/off the water and basic paddling techniques.
The ‘Discover’ Course runs over 2 x Saturdays (0900hrs -1700hrs) or 6/7 Wednesday evenings of 2hrs each. This course will enable you to paddle using club equipment without a coach/ instructor in small groups of at least 3.
You must be 18yrs or over. (Children above the age of 14 will be allowed on the course if accompanied by parent/carer)
You must be able to swim 50m in light clothing (without a buoyancy aid)
No previous experience is required

START COURSE £50PP
We have 3x Start course’s available with a maximum 8 places on each. Places will be allocated on a first come basis.
You will be required to attend the whole session to receive your 'Start' award.
Start Course 1 - Sat 3rd May 0900hrs - 1300hrs
Start Course 2 - Sat 17th May 0900hrs - 1300hrs
Start Course 3 - Sat 24th May 0900hrs - 1300hrs

DISCOVER COURSE £90 PP
We have 3x Discover course’s available with a maximum 8 places on each. Places will be allocated on a first come basis.
Each Saturday course will take place over two weekends, the third course will take place over 6/7 Wednesday evenings comprising of 2hrs each.
You will be required to attend all Course sessions to receive your 'Discover' award.
Discover Course 1:

Discover Course 2:
Saturday 28th June 0900hrs - 1700hrs
Saturday 5th July 0900hrs - 1700hrs

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Clothing
Please wear suitable clothing for being in the water.
Wet shoes/neoprene wet socks if you have them.
Light pumps will work if they are ok to get wet.
Leggings/shorts (appropriate for the weather), t-shirt, long or short sleeved, windproof jacket and thin but warm tops/trousers.
It is better to have a few thin layers rather than one thick layer·
You may get wet, please bring a change of clothes
Please bring water and energy snacks (Water refills from NCC kitchen and warm drinks)

CANCELLATION
If you are unable to attend the course, you may cancel up to 5 days prior to the date You will have the option of rearranging for an alternative date upon availability or receive a full refund.
If you cancel within 5 days a refund will only be made if we are able to fill your space. You may transfer your place with a friend.
BECOMING A PADDLER
We encourage all paddlers to obtain a PaddleUK On the Water membership where you can register your awards, which includes a waterways licence and insurance to paddle over 4,500km of river navigations and canals across England and Wales.
If you wish to further your paddling skills into kayaking, the club run a series of additional courses throughout the summer. Instructors & Coaches are unpaid club volunteers and on joining the club we similarly expect people to volunteer to help.
As a member of Newbury Canoe Club, you will be able to continue developing your skills, meet other like-minded members and become part of our growing paddling community. You will be also able to use club equipment or store your own.
